Cleveland Browns punter Dave Zastudil will miss the season due to an injured right knee. Zastudil had surgery in 2009 for a torn patellar tendon and missed the last eight games of the season.
Coach Eric Mangini said the knee was not responding well enough to play, so the team elected to place him on injured reserve, ending his season before it started.
The Browns punter was in the final year of a five-year contract with the Browns and will be a free agent after the season. Mangini said he expects the 31-year-old Zastudil to do all he can to get back on the field next year.
Zastudil is an eight year veteran who spent the first four years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens.
Reggie Hodges, who filled in last year, will take over as the Browns starting punter.
