Chargers’ Merriman Won’t Report to Camp

Shawne Merriman

Merriman will sit out start of camp

San Diego Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman is holding out of training camp, but not for more money or a long-term contract.

Miffed because the Chargers openly shopped him during the draft, Merriman wants San Diego to guarantee his job stability.

“To me, Merriman said, it really comes down to, ‘Am I on the trading block this week? The third week of the season, am I on the block?’ Where is that comfortability for me?”

Despite being virtually non-existent for the Chargers  a year ago, the six-year veteran believes that he is the type of player that a team can build a defense around.

“I’m only coming back to be the guy on the defense. I’m not coming back to be a guy.” Merriman added, ”I want to be on a team where someone is going to be building a defense around me.”

Merriman played in 14 games, totaled just 36 tackles and four sacks with no forced fumbles or interceptions for the  Chargers in 2009.
