As the deadline approaches for NFL teams to have their roster’s cut to 53, the San Diego Chargers released among others, defensive back Nathan Vasher, quarterback Jonathan Crompton, and wideout Josh Reed, according to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Crompton’s release has the Chargers entering the regular season with just two quarterbacks, trading for another if Philip Rivers is injured.
Cornerback Nathan Vasher was released, a move that was signaled when the team picked up defensive back Fred Bennett off waivers on Tuesday.
Reed’s fate was thought to be safe until the Chargers traded for ex-Cowboy Patrick Crayton, making the veteran wideout expendable.
Also cut, were rookie running backs Curtis Brinkley and Shawnbrey McNeal, receivers Seyi Ajirotutu and Jeremy Williams, and defensive lineman Derrick Jones.
