Chargers Add QB O’Sullivan

Chargers' third string quarterback J.T. O'Sullivan

When the San Diego Chargers placed quarterback Jonathan Crompton on the practice squad, it appeared that the Chargers were content to enter the regular season with just two signal callers on the active roster.

If starting quarterback Phillip Rivers were ever injured, the Bolts would just have to shop for a veteran via the free agent market.

According to Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Chargers re-thought their stance on the quarterback position when eight-year veteran J.T. O’Sullivan hit the waiver wire over the weekend.

“A third quarterback was not in our original plans when making up the roster,” Chargers’ GM A.J. Smith said. “But with the availability of J.T., we felt it would be a good third level of maximum protection at a crucial position.”

O’Sullivan will play behind Chargers’ backup Billy Volek, who compiled a 45.9 passer rating during the preseason, playing most of his snaps with inexperienced lineman and found himself on the run or in the dirt on most snaps.

There will be no competition for the backup role.
