New details have emerged surrounding the arrest of Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Jermaine Phillips.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call in reference to a domestic related incident early Sunday morning in the Tampa area.

According to police, Phillips’ wife called police after he grabbed her around the neck, which impeded her normal breathing.

The incident began when Mrs. Phillips confronted her husband after finding a suspicious phone number in his cell phone, FootballNewsnow.com has learned exclusively. He was asleep when she first approached him about it.

An argument ensued from there, which moved into the living room area of the house where the alleged strangulation incident occurred. Mrs. Phillips then left the residence, telling her husband that she was going to walk the dog and called 911.

The Buccaneers strong safety was taken into custody at 4:35 a.m. Sunday. He remains in jail without bond according to online records.

The Buccaneers organization issued a brief statement on the arrest Sunday night: “The Buccaneers are aware of the serious charges against Jermaine Phillips and will monitor the situation closely.”
