The New Orleans Saints have lost one of their defensive leaders to free agency.

Linebacker Scott Fujita signed with the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, ending his four-year run in the bayou.

The move could bring about more than just a change of scenery for the eight-year NFL veteran. The Browns may move Fujita to inside linebacker.

Scott possesses tremendous size for a linebacker, and this will allow him to play inside or outside in our 3-4 defense,” Browns General Ganager Tom Heckert told Tony Grossi of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. “He has been a starter throughout his career, has been exposed to several different defensive schemes and has been successful in all of them. He is a great leader and played a big part in the success that the Saints achieved last year.”

The Saints didn’t think that Fujita would leave due to his strong ties to the community.

The Browns have picked up the pace this offseason. They re-signed Josh Cribbs last week and also signed offensive lineman Tony Pashos on Sunday.

UPDATE: Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees posted pleasantries about Fujita on Twitter after learning of his release.

“We lost a great player, person, and leader today in free agency,” Brees wrote. “Scott Fujita signed with the Browns. He will be missed.”
