The Cleveland Browns lost to the St. Louis Rams 19-17 in a rain-soaked game during which the Browns turned the ball over five times. The Browns suffered three lost fumbles and two interceptions, one by Seneca Wallace and one by Brett Ratliff.
Starting quarterback Jake Delhomme was very efficient and didn’t seem to mind the rain in the least in going 12-16 for 127 yards and a touchdown of six yards to Ben Watson, that was originally ruled incomplete, as the referee said Watson’s left handed juggling catch wasn’t made with both feet inbound. Browns Head Coach Eric Mangini challenged and the call was overturned.
Peyton Hillis was a force at running back for the Browns, carrying 12 times for 51 yards, including a crowd pleasing nine yard ramble in which he pinballed off defenders and made the crowd roar. The leading receivers for the Browns were Josh Cribbs with five catches for 30 yards and a touchdown from Seneca Wallace, and Chansi Stuckey, who had three catches for 51 yards.
The Browns defense played a good game overall, holding the Rams to only 172 yards of net offense but could not overcome the hole the turnovers put them in as they didn’t force any of their own. They held number one overall pick, quarterback Sam Bradford, to six completions in 14 attempts for a measly 24 yards. Linebacker Chris Gocong led the defense with six tackles and cornerback Eric Wright had five tackles and a pass defensed.
