Broncos’ No. 2 QB Spot Still Up for Grabs

Tim Tebow

Tim Tim Tebow is battling Brady Quinn for the Broncos' backup quarterback spot

As the Denver Broncos prepare for the opening week of the regular season, head coach Josh McDaniels said that the competition for the teams’ backup quarterback position remains open, according to Mike Chambers of the Denver Post.

“We’re not going to name (the No. 2 QB) right now,” McDaniels said during his press conference this morning. “We got three that we like and … (Tebow and Quinn) are going to compete and we’ll try to make the decision that we feel is best on game day for our team, based on how we’re going to play the game.”

If the Broncos plan to feature their “Wild Horses” formation, look for Tebow to get the nod.

Tebow’s and Quinn’s preseason numbers are comparable, but Tebow offers the Denver offense much more flexibility due to his ability to scramble and run with the football.

Quinn was sacked seven times for 44 yards in 56 attempts during the preseason, while Tebow was sacked twice for just 3 yards, although he only attempted 39 passes.

“There’s a lot of factors that will go into that,” McDaniels said of choosing Orton’s backup. “How they practice and how things look during the week will probably play a large role in determining who we name as the No. 2.”

McDaniels added that the game’s location, Tebow’s home town of Jacksonville, won’t
influence his decision, but if the rookie does win the job, McDaniels said, “I’ll be happy for him; he’ll probably ask for more tickets.”

The Broncos only plan to carry two quarterbacks for the season opener vs. the Jaguars, and whoever doesn’t win the backup job won’t dress for Sunday’s game.
