Brett Favre announced his retirement effective at the end of his 2010 season.
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre swears this is it. His 20th NFL season will be his last.
After a third straight summer of guessing games and dragging out his decision of whether or not to play, Favre has taken a page from the Michael Jackson playbook and declared this is it.
And that is certainly something to take note of. The man who is perennially on the fence has come out and definitively announced his retirement to the public following this season. For the first time in a long time, there will be no questions hanging over him following the season.
Many will take the “I’ll believe it when I see it” approach. But Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress seems ready to move on without him.
“I do, yeah,” Childress said when asked whether he believed this is Favre’s swan song. “He likes even numbers. It’s 20, a nice even 20.”
The Vikings coach was ready to move on this week when he sent three players to Mississippi to get a firm answer from future Hall of Famer one way or the other. Now, with a full season to prepare future quarterback plans, there is little doubt the wheels are already starting to turn in the coach’s head about who will be under center next season.
As for whether Favre himself believes it…
“I do believe it now,” he said. “I do. I gotta fall part sometime. I’d like to go out on top.”
Time will tell.
