Drew Brees
The New Orleans Saints are champions of the NFL after defeating the Indianapolis Colts 31-17 at Super Bowl XLIV.
Drew Brees tied Tom Brady’s Super Bowl record with 32 completed passes en route to the victory and becoming the game’s MVP.
You could feel the momentum swing after the first quarter, which Peyton Manning and the Colts dominated. From that point the Saints outscored Indianapolis 31-7.
The momentum swing kicked into overdrive after the Saints recovered a surprise onside kick to start the second half and went on a six-play, 58-yard scoring drive that was capped off by a 16-yard touchdown pass to Pierre Thomas.
The Colts would regain the lead briefly after they answered with a touchdown drive over their own thanks to a four-yard touchdown run by Joseph Addai.
Those would be the last points the Colts would score.
Brees was absolutely flawless, completing 32-of-39 passing attempts, throwing for 288 yards and two touchdowns. He did not throw an interception.
There was little doubt that he would be the Super Bowl MVP.
Pierre Thomas and Jeremy Shockey each caught touchdown passes, but it was Marques Coltson who proved to be Brees’ favorite target. The pair hooked up seven times for 83 yards.
Devery Henderson also had seven catches for 63 yards. Overall, Brees found eight different receivers, keeping the Colts defense on their toes.
Peyton Manning turned out another fine performance, completing 31-of-45 passing attempts for 333 yards and a touchdown. However, it was his lone interception that would prove to be the most costly.
The NFL MVP was picked off by Tracy Porter who returned it 74-yards for a Saints touchdown.
The win marks the first time the Saints hoisted the Lombardi Trophy and celebrated as champions of the NFL.
Some would say that the healing in the city of New Orleans is now complete. That may be a stretch, but this certainly goes a long way in helping.
Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints? Nobody.
