Terry Bradshaw believes Donovan McNabb's benching set back African-American quarterbacks

The quarterback controversy in Washington isn’t going anywhere any time soon. The bye this week for the Redskins has only added to the media frenzy surrounding Mike Shanahan’s decision to bench Donovan McNabb in the final two minutes of last weekend’s game.

The latest to weigh in? FOX analyst and Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw who not only sided with McNabb, but did so with a unique view of the potential racial ramifications the benching will have.

“The very thing that held back the black quarterback for years, for decades in the NFL was the fact — ‘what?’ — they said they weren’t smart enough,” Bradshaw said during Brian Billick’s Friday online broadcast on FOXSports.com. “You and I both know that is crap.

“And now he opens up that old wound to a guy with a lot of pride. He ought to be ashamed of himself,” he said of Shanahan.

Bradshaw’s thought process wasn’t limited exclusively to race. He also questioned Shanahan’s decision to publicly “call out” McNabb.

“Where Shanahan screwed up–you call your quarterback in. You have a private conference with him,” said Bradshaw. “You don’t call him out to the media.”

The long-time Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback praised the way McNabb handled the situation, adding he wouldn’t have been able to restrain his comments in the same manner.

“I would have fired off. At this stage in my career I would have fired back,” the FOX NFL Sunday favorite said.

As for what the entire situation means for McNabb’s future in the nation’s capital…

“I think he’s definitely gone. I don’t think McNabb will be back,” Bradshaw said.

Billick agreed.
