The Bills will sit rookie RB C.J. Spiller and QB Ryan Fitzpatrick in the team’s preseason finale in Detroit on Thursday night, as both players have more or less solidified their respective roles.

After completing 6 of 9 passes for 77 yards and a TD in significant time vs. Cincinnati last week, Fitzpatrick effectively locked up his spot behind starting QB Trent Edwards according to the BuffaloBills.com. Spiller absence will be a precautionary measure says the Buffalo News, as the team doesn’t want to risk and injury with RB Fred Jackson already questionable for Week 1.

The fate of the Bills third-string QB position is now in the hands of Brian Brohm. The former Louisville standout will get two quarters to prove he’s more beneficial than Levi Brown, who will only get the last quarter of the game to make his case.

Without Spiller, who will now finish the preseason with 122 yards and 3 TDs in 3 games, RB Marshawn Lynch appears to be the feature back for the night. Lynch has missed the past few weeks with a high ankle sprain so the extensive action will catch him up to speed for Week 1.

Second-year S Jairus Byrd (groin surgery) will also sit tonight, although last word is that it’s still a possibility he’ll be ready for the team’s Sept. 12 opener vs. Miami.
