Bills Deny Interest in Trade for QB Matt Leinart

The Bills have denied Adam Schefter's report that they are interested in trading for Arizona QB Matt Leinart.

The Bills have announced they are not one of the reported three teams interested in trading for QB Matt Leinart, and have no desire to acquire the disgruntled Arizona Cardinals QB.

Tuesday afternoon, ESPN‘s Adam Schefter reported that three teams– the Oakland Raiders, New York Giants, and Buffalo– were engaged in trade talks with the Cardinals brass about the 27-year-old QB. The Bills quick responded with a message on their official website: “That report is erroneous. [We have] confirmed that the Bills have not had any discussions with the Cardinals in regards to Matt Leinart and aren’t anticipating any in the future. The report is simply not true.”

Schefter contends that the Bills had “ongoing discussions this summer” with the Arizona about Leinart, but that the team is unlikely to make a trade for the former Heisman winner because of his contract.  Leinart is due $2.485 million this season and balloons up to $7.36 million in 2011.

All indications are that the team is happy with QB Trent Edwards, who has looked consistently strong so far this preseason. Edwards has completed 63% of his passes, throwing for 304 yards with 2 TDs and an INT in 3 games. Backups Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brain Brohm have been servicable, as well, meaning that if a trade goes through for Leinart, it’ll be out of preference, not necessity.

Oakland has also joined Buffalo in disputing Schefter’s report, claiming his report is “untrue” and that they too are “happy with [their] quarterback situation.”
