Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher is waiting to return to the NFL until he can coach the New York Giants according to Jerome Bettis.

On his satellite radio show last week the former Steelers running back said that Cowher “got his eyes” on the job.

“That’s the team that he really coveted,” Bettis said on the show per Ralph Vacchiano of the NY Daily News. “This is where he always wanted to be. The Mara family, he’s been very close to them. … He’s known them very well and was on the inside track — before the Giants won the Super Bowl — for that job. And I think he’s holding out for that opportunity if it presents itself.”

Cowher was quick to downplay the rumors, but didn’t outright deny them. Although he did say that Bettis didn’t know what he was talking about.

“I haven’t talked to Jerome Bettis in two years,” Cowher told the paper. “I’ll leave it at that.”

Still, you can’t write off Bettis’ comments just yet, even if they are just opinion.

He accurately stated that 2006 would be Cowher’s final season with the Steelers long before he called it quits.
