The Arizona Cardinals are beginning to look like a fitting landing spot for QB Kellen Clemens, who the Jets have been trying to trade since this year’s NFL Draft.
According to ESPNNewYork.com, the Cardinals are looking for some outside help for their shaky QB situation and have been frequent buyers of ex-Jets players in the past. The team already signed S Kerry Rhodes, K Jay Feely, and G Alan Faneca this offseason, all of whom were members of the 2009 Jets’ squad.
Arizona has struggled to fill the void left at QB by Kurt Warner’s retirement this preseason. QB Matt Leinart has been accurate, connecting on 10 of 13 passes for 77 yards, but hasn’t been able to get the team in the endzone or adjusted to varying defensive schemes. Coach Ken Whisenhunt tapped the newly-acquired Derek Anderson to start over Leinart in Saturday’s preseason clash with the Chicago Bears, but the former Brown has had his early share of interception problems.
The Jets said they’d listen to offers for Clemens after summer-signing QB Mark Brunell locked up the No. 2 spot on the team’s depth chart last week. Clemens is also due $1.1 million this year, making the Oregon product a little too pricey for a third-stringer. His veteran experience coupled with a good preseason numbers, 11-16 for 116 yards in 2 games, would make him a bargain get for a desperate Arizona team.
The Jets gear up to play the Redskins in the Meadowlands on Friday.
