After coming to terms on a new three-year deal with nose tackle Casey Hampton, the Pittsburgh Steelers placed their franchise tag on kicker Jeff Reed.
Like Hampton, the Steelers plan to sign Reed to a long-term deal.
“We’ve been in contact with Jeff,” Steelers director of football operations Kevin Colbert said. “He’s aware of the situation. His agent is aware of the situation. Our goal is to lock Jeff up long-term and have him finish his career with the Steelers.”
In other AFC news, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft believes that the team is close to reaching a deal with Vince Wilfork.
“Vince was a priority,” Kraft said. “We worked very hard and I think both sides have worked hard and I think we’re close and I hope we close something but in the end, he was our priority, the first priority.”
The team placed their franchise tag on him Monday.
