49ers QB Nate Davis Doesn’t Do Himself Any Favors Against Vikings

Nate Davis did okay on paper, but the deeper story lies on film

Despite a decent showing statistically, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Nate Davis didn’t do himself any favors in securing the backup job behind starter Alex Smith Sunday night against the 49ers.

Davis was 7-of-16 passing for 114 yards and did not throw an interception. He led the 49ers on two scoring drives, both of which ended in Jay Nedney field goals.

Those six points were enough to secure a 15-10 victory over Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. But, they weren’t enough to secure him the job as the No. 2 quarterback on the 49ers roster.

“I don’t think he’s put himself in a position to really compete,” head coach Mike Singletary said after the game, per Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. “I think right now he’s competing with himself. I really do.

“I really like the kid. There’s a lot to like about him, But there is a work ethic that’s involved in terms of being a quarterback in the NFL and he’s got to get it. It’s as simple as that.”

While casual observers would say Davis is getting an unfair shake, the truth is he was inconsistent. He even admitted to blowing several protection calls.

So, without having played a down Sunday, David Carr seems locked in as the No. 2 guy on the team.
