The San Francisco 49ers placed their franchise tag on nose tackle Aubrayo Franklin on Tuesday.

The tag is of the non-exclusive variety according to Mike Florio of PFT. The team will have to pay him a salary of $7 million for the one-year deal, which he must accept. The move prevents him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Meanwhile, the team will continue trying to nail him down to a long-term contract.

Aubrayo has proven to be a valuable contributor to our defense and we are looking forward to having him on our team going forward,” 49ers G.M. Scot McCloughan said, per Florio.
“Although a contract extension has not been completed at this time, we will continue to have discussions with Aubrayo and his agent.”

The decision to place the tag on Franklin is hardly a surprise.
