Jon Gruden is not confirming that he will be the next head coach of the Washington Redskins. At the same time, he’s not denying it.

As soon as news broke this Thursday morning that Vinny Cerrato resigned from the team and was quickly replaced by Bruce Allen, speculation heated up that Gruden wouldn’t be far behind.

In fact, there were unconfirmed reports that the Gruden family were already looking for homes in the DC area.

The wrinkle in bringing Gruden to the Redskins is his current contract with ESPN.

For their part, ESPN issued a statement saying the network looked forward to working with Gruden for years to come.

Gruden then released his own statement, giving praise to Redskins for Allen’s hire and their time together.

The one thing his statement did not clear up was whether he intends to step out of the broadcast booth in order to take over the reigns as the next Washington coach.

“Bruce Allen is a great football mind and an even better person,” Gruden’s statement began. “His background and understanding of the Washington Redskins’ tradition will be a huge asset to the Redskins. He is a leader and a great fit for this job. He’s a big reason why I had any success in coaching. I’m really happy for him and I wish him the best.”
