Tyrone Hartsfield, the man who nearly succeeded in shooting former Jacksonville Jaguars lineman Richard Collier to death, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Thursday.

Hartsfield was convicted of attempted murder after shooting Collier as many as 14 times in September of 2008.

The shooting left Collier paralyzed below the waist. He also had to have a leg amputated.

“There is not a sentence I could give that would address what happened to Mr. Collier,” Judge Mallory Cooper said as she handed down the sentence. “It was a cowardly act; it was a brutal act.”

Collier was in the courtroom for the proceedings.
