It is well known that Notre Dame officials told Charlie Weis to skip his scheduled recruiting trip in California that was planned for this week. A number of outlets have also reported that Notre Dame asked him to come back to South Bend after the Stanford game to clean out his office. Another report stated that UND officials have barred Weis from attending any team practices, speaking to the media or using Notre Dame stationary in an official capacity.
So where does this leave Weis? Back in the NFL most likely.
In fact, a number of NFL franchises have already contacted him about coming in as offensive coordinator for their club according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The leading candidates include the Kansas City Chiefs, Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots where Weis originally made a name for himself earlier this decade.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Peter King, the Indianapolis Colts also have an outside shot at retaining Weis’ services in 2010.
But don’t discount the Cleveland Browns, either.
Former UND QB Brady Quinn is a big fan of Weis.
Quinn recently spoke up about the turmoil at his alma mater in an interview with the Associate Press.
“Personally I think it would be a horrible decision if they did make that change,” the Cleveland quarterback said. “I think there are a lot of circumstances that play into seasons like this. Hopefully he’ll have an opportunity to have another year with the guys.”
As for once again working for Coach Weis: “It’d be nice. I’d like to play under him again if I had the opportunity. It’d be cool.”
An official decision on his future at Notre Dame is expected shortly.
